The relevance of the age-old concept of wisdom-bridge to handle mental health challenges.
GLOW WEBINAR
September 14th 2019
Globally, more than 300 million people suffer from depression, according to the World Health Organization. Depression is the world’s leading cause of disability and it contributes to 800,000 suicides per year, the majority of which occur in developing countries. A new study shows that grandparents and grandchildren have real, measurable effects on each other’s psychological well-being long into grandchildren’s adulthood.
In this webinar, we highlight a case study from Zimbabwe where a psychiatrist Dr. Dixon Chibanda ingeniously devised a new way to tackle this issue with a bench and a team of 14 grandmothers. In 2017 alone, the Friendship Bench, as the program is called, helped over 30,000 people there. The method has been empirically vetted and have been expanded to countries beyond, including the US.
Chrysula Winegar from the United Nations Foundation will discuss this case study and the connections to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #3 – Health and Well Being (Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages).
An experiential session of Heartfulness relaxation and meditation will also be conducted in the second half of the webinar. Relaxation and meditation is proven to treat and regulate feelings of depression and other mental health challenges. These can support long term medical treatment. Adding meditation and relaxation to your health regime – free of cost, and also availing a certified Heartfulness trainer’s services greatly improves the quality of life.
