The worldwide deaths because of COVID-19 is increasing multifold in an unprecedented manner and the world seems to have come together to fight this virus. It is a time of fear, anxiety, confusion, alarm, and a lot of negativity. In this hour of crisis and pandemonium, join us, as we share ideas, thoughts, and a few tips to take care of our mental health and emotional stability.
Speaker : Dr. Swati Kannan is a surgical, general and cosmetic dermatologist currently practicing in California. She specializes in Mohs skin cancer surgery and reconstruction, which is a subspecialty of surgical dermatology. She actively participates in research within the field of dermatology, mentors residents and talks frequently in many conferences and CMEs. Dr. Kannan started Heartfulness meditation about 12 years ago and became a trainer of Heartfulness 3 years ago.
Dr. Kannan incorporates relaxation, meditation, breathing and positive affirmations as part of patient care, to reduce patient stress and anxiety prior to, during and after surgeries. She has begun to incorporate the same meditative approach when counseling trainees and mentees who are pursuing medicine. She is passionate about mentoring trainees and ensuring that they achieve inner stability, clarity and focus while chasing their career goals.
Speaker : Mia Malan founded the Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism in South Africa in 2013 and is the media start-up’s editor-in-chief and executive director. Under her leadership, Bhekisisa’s online readership increased 30 fold and its donor funding eight fold between 2013 and 2019.
Malan has won 26 African journalism awards for her work and is a former fellow of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University.
Malan has a master’s degree in journalism from Stellenbosch University and taught health journalism in the media studies department at Rhodes University in Grahamstown.
She serves on the board of directors of the Centre for Science & Technology Mass Communication at Stellenbosch University in South Africa and is an advisory board member of the Women In Media Network of the Graca Machel Trust.
