What is the role of the individual in creating a more peaceful and just world? What drives the reform of social and political systems? Where does true change begin: In courts and legislatures? With political theories or platforms? In the streets?
Social justice advocates recognize that to be successful, a campaign for systemic reform must move hearts and minds.
This session will explore the impetus for change in the human spirit: Engaging hearts and minds in the service of tolerance, peace, fairness, justice. The presenter will discuss great reformers who incorporated contemplative practice in movements for social justice – including Dag Hammarskjold, Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King.
The presentation will explore the use of contemplative disciplines to raise consciousness on an individual level, to facilitate reconciliation, and to promote cohesion and unity among communities dedicated to change.
The program will conclude with a guided relaxation exercise and a brief silent meditation.
Speaker : Robert (Bob) Perry, began his meditation practice in 1999 – an undertaking he refers to as a mid-life blessing. For more than twenty-five years he has worked as a lawyer in the area of civil rights and civil liberties. Bob is particularly interested in the use of contemplative disciplines to support movements for social justice. As a trainer in Heartfulness Meditation – a form of raja yoga, he has presented many programs on the use of contemplative disciplines to support personal growth and societal change. He is a member of the Committee on International Day of Yoga at the United Nations.
