Dear readers,

We belong to the people and places we care for, and that care for us. That belonging makes us responsible to one another.

That kind of belonging threads through this month's issue. Belonging is not possession. It is a quality that awakens in us a sense of responsibility arising from within rather than being imposed from outside. One of our essay winners writes that a single tree stands alone, while a forest endures through the interweaving of roots and branches. In "Carbon-Neutral Campuses" and "Heartfulness in Schools," that responsibility extends to the world around us and the people who share it.

Alienation says, "Not my problem." Belonging says otherwise. That difference in attitude shapes everything we do.
