Respect for all life forms has been the corner stone of conservation in India, and the teachings of Buddha and Mahaveera who extolled the virtue of compassion and non-violence has had pervasive influence on the society. Indians had learnt to live in harmony with nature, as a child on the lap of mother earth. This talk examines if such belief systems still have relevance in the conservation of the mega-biodiversity in the contemporary scenario.

We are in an era of mass extinction of species. Science and technology have been playing a crucial role in the recovery of several species that are on the verge of extinction. However, technological interventions alone is not sufficient. Compassion ought to be the hallmark of conservation.
Dr. V. Ramakantha hails from a village in in the heart of the Western Ghats of India. He has held senior executive positions as a member of the Indian Forest Service. His research is in the area of declining bird populations in the urban settings of India. He is an eminent writer, published books and articles on wide range of topics on forestry and wildlife and he is a consummate speaker. He has received several honours in international salons of photography.
