Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Eurythmy is a unique movement art wherein the shaping power of speech and music are naturally made visible as gestures, rhythms, forms, and color moods.

Developed in the early 20th century by Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Anthroposophy — a spiritual philosophy that seeks to understand the human being in the context of the broader cosmos — eurythmy aims to help one to become more sensitive, more ecologically conscious, and more aware of forming a deep connection to whatever one is doing in everyday life, in their surroundings.

One of the bases of Eurythmy is that wherever there is movement, there is the current of sound.

The gestures correspond to the sounds of speech and musical notes, and they are woven together into choreography. So that eurythmy is often called « visible speech » and « visible song », the body giving form to the invisible qualities of language and music.

The practice is often used in Waldorf education, a pedagogical approach inspired by anthroposophy, to promote artistic, physical, emotional, and cognitive development in students.

Eurythmy is more than just a physical exercise; it is considered a spiritual and holistic practice that aims to engage the whole being—body, soul, and spirit. While its principles are rooted in Anthroposophy, eurythmy has also found applications beyond Waldorf education, including therapeutic settings and artistic performances. It offers a unique way of connecting with language, music, and movement, inviting participants to explore and express the deeper dimensions of human experience.
